  • What is the difference between Bitcoin and Ethereum?

Bitcoin vs. Ethereum & Altcoins

The industry largely considers there to be Bitcoin and then everything else as a cryptocurrency or Altcoin. Bitcoin is unique because it was created by a pseudonymous individual named Satoshi Nakamoto. It's important to note that Satoshi solved a computer science problem that had never been solved, the double-spend problem (byzantine general's problem). Bitcoin was created to be a money, and it is primarily considered a store of value, like gold but digital. It has similar qualities to gold but even better. Bitcoin's value propositions are decentralization (cannot be easily manipulated), censorship-resistant (cannot be seized by governments), and is scarce (opposed to the US Dollar, which we print more of). From day one, Bitcoin has successfully done what it set out to do.

Altcoins are different in many respects. For instance, many claim to be decentralized, but no single cryptocurrency is 100% decentralized other than Bitcoin. Altcoins have teams who make decisions that may conflict with their community or sound money principles. They have ever-changing roadmaps which guide their projects. Etherum was the second created after Bitcoin, which focuses heavily on Smart Contracts and dual layer protocols that allow other coins/companies to build dApps (Decentralized Apps). These projects are trying to be MORE than programmable money. While success is probable in a few cases, many of these projects are experimental, highly speculative, and mostly absent of sound principles that generally allow natural monies to succeed.

In summary, Bitcoin is widely adopted and accepted as a store of value. It has many "sound, hard money" principles like scarcity, saleability, and fungibility. A small percentage of Altcoins may end up also being successful, but many will fail. From the lens of an investment, it might not necessarily be the place you'll want to place your hard-earned cash or any significant percentage of your portfolio.

  • Do I have to buy a whole Bitcoin?

No. Bitcoin is divisible by eight decimals. 100 Million Sats (Short for Satoshis) = 1 Bitcoin. You can spend $10, $50, $100, or any amount to receive a fraction of a Bitcoin. Avoid Unit Bias.

  • Does it matter where I buy it?

Yes. Certain exchanges do not let you withdraw/send your Bitcoin off-exchange to a personal wallet. These types of exchanges aren't recommended. As of March 6th, 2021, both PayPal and Robinhood do not let you send your Bitcoin off-exchange. This lack of functionality runs counter to the ethos of Bitcoin, and below, you can find exchanges that are safe, easy, and allow withdraws.

  • Should I buy Bitcoin right now, or wait until it drops?

There is a famous saying that goes, It's about time in the market, not timing the market. Rarely do individuals time the market. Getting in immediately, and staying the longest, will be better almost every time. A great example comes from Morgan Housel's recent book, the Psychology of Money, where he writes, "As I write this, Warren Buffett's net worth is $84.5 billion. Of that, $84.2 billion was accumulated after his 50th birthday. $81.5 billion came after he qualified for Social Security, in his mid-60s."

  • Should I trade my Bitcoin or other Cryptocurrencies?

No. Trading your Bitcoin isn’t recommended for two reasons. The first being that you will have initiated a taxable event. The second being research shows a large percentage of day traders, up to 80%, aren’t profitable or underperform their benchmarks.

  • Do I have to pay taxes on Bitcoin?

You do not have to pay taxes for buying Bitcoin, but you will for selling it or exchanging it. Buying Bitcoin is not considered a taxable event. Selling your Bitcoin back for Dollars or trading it for another cryptocurrency is regarded as a taxable event and is subject to short-term or long-term capital gains tax. If you have detailed questions, contact a financial or tax advisor to see how buying and selling Bitcoin can impact you.
